Why do I have a White Blood Cell Count? What does it mean? And What Can I Do? I am a twenty-one year old female who suffers from horrible allergies every Spring and recently during the Fall as well. I take Allegra on a daily basis and Benadryl at night when I get really bad, but on certain days nothing works and the allergies take a horrible toll on my body. Recently I had to take prednisone to get rid of the horrible swelling in my throat. I couldn't even swallow my own spit the pain was so bad! The doctor's thought I had developed Strep or even Mono and I was tested for everything. However, the only thing they found was a high count of white blood cells in my body. What does this mean having too many white blood cells? And what can I do to avoid this horrible pain of allergies and throat pain and swelling?

wcqa626 replied: "A high white blood cell count could be an indicator of: Infection Use of certain medications, such as corticosteroids, antibiotics or anti-seizure drugs Severe physical or emotional stress Chronic bone marrow diseases such as a myeloproliferative disorder Acute or chronic leukemia Tissue damage, such as from burns So you would have to talk to your doctor, to find what is causing this."

KC replied: "Your white count being up. means you have an infection somewhere.. you need to get your dr to find the source of the infection.. Good luck :)"

tiffany_kitty replied: "As white blood cells work to remove any foreign antigens or bodies from the system, a high white blood cell count basically just means that you are suffering from a possible infection. It could also be the cause of your multiple allergies, as the white blood cells are the main components of your immune system. A hyper-active immune system (such as yours) will give you tonnes of allergies to think about. There isn't much you can do to avoid the allergies, but for the pain and swelling, you can try taking some honeyed tea to soothe the throat. Also, strepsils blackcurrent flavour has a wonderful numbing effect as well, and seriously makes u feel better. give it a try"

beachloveric replied: "I can tell you for sure that steroids cause your white cell count to elevate, everyone has a white and a red cell count, it refers to the cells in your blood stream. There are several white cell types and then the red blood cells. Don't worry too much a bout it, it will auto correct when you get off the steroids. Your white cells also eleveate if you have an infection. Try alternative therapies for the throat since you have problems with standard remedies like prednisone"

tiny b replied: "White blood cells kill bacteria.. It sends out a big signal to your doctor that something is going on which is why they checked you for Mono and Strep.. When we are attacked by a sickness, we produce more white blood cells to fight it off.. Just to help you get it in purspective.. Sounds like they are doing all they can for you.. Stay with your doctor.. And good luck.."

AuntTater replied: "you have red blood cells and white blood cells. Your white blood cells fight off "aliens"...like infection or any other sickness. You probably have a high white count BECAUSE of your allergies. Your white cells are trying to evict the "aliens"(pollen, dust, etc.)"

tlbrown42000 replied: "As a healthcare practioner I agree that it was a sign of infection. Hope they gave you a course of antibiotics. White blood cells are the cells that patrol the body and destroy bacteria, etc. When you are infected, the body produces more to help you fight. So if we do a blood test and your white blood cell count is high , we know you have an infection (especially if you have symptoms to go with it) and we usually give the appropriate antibiotics. I've seen many patients today who have the same thing. Seems to be the time of year for it. What encourages this to be 'time of year related' is the allergies. When you have allergies affecting you, you know that it makes your sinuses 'wet' and swollen and this is the right environment for bacteria to grow. So it may start as an allergy...but then the bacteria move in and you get infection. So keeping allergies under control can lessen the incidences of illness. Have you ever tried using the nasal sprays (Nasonex, Flonase,Rhinocort, Nasacort, there are quite a few to select from. They all need a prescription) Two sprays each nostril once daily....used everyday during the allergy periods....not just when you are ill....can help alot. If not....it may warrent a visit to an allergy specialist. Keep trying...there are answers. See your healthcare provider. If Allegra is not helping you anymore...try Zrytec."

ohevshalomel replied: "Everyone alive has a white blood cell count (or at least they should). White blood cells are the cells that help to fight diseases in the body--if you didn't have white blood cells, you could easily die from a simple infection that wouldn't bother a normal person. (This is one of the reasons that people with HIV have health problems--a lower-than-normal count of cells that fight disease.) You, on the other hand, have mentioned having a high count of white blood cells. When a person has a high count of white blood cells, I believe (correct me if I'm wrong) it is often indicative of the person's body attempting to fight off some illness or perceived illness. When a person has allergies, it is often because the person has an abnormal reaction to environmental stimuli (such as certain springtime plants), wherein the immune system (including white blood cells) perceives that something such as, say, pollen, is an intruder that will harm the body if not eliminated. Thus, you have the increased immune reaction which can cause allergy symptoms, ranging from mild to severe. To determine if this is the cause of your high white blood cell count (or if you may have some other or underlying problem), it would be best to discuss these test results with your physician. He or she will also be able to tell you what your next step should be in attempting to get relief from these symptoms. Hope you feel better!"

Doctors confused or just stupid high white blood cells? Question: I have a family member originally diagnosed with sarcoidosis 2003, did the prednisone thing for 4 years gained tons of weight etc.... no help , now he has lost and is still loosing weight and has an extremely high white blood cell count, doctors are suggesting all kids of tests and litterally scaring this kid to death, he is a 25 year old white male, any suggestions? No fever that I know of but will have him check into that. Thanks

jamie m replied: "any chance he has had glandular fever, this produces high white blood cell count and can last a very long time, tiredness lack of energy but no symptoms as such as infection so deep in system can leave people with a weakness to infections. hope you find out what it is and get the right treatment good luck"

ruse v replied: "Well, could be a lot of things, or could be nothing... God knows! Prednisone high dose for long time- that's means problems. I hope is just stupid high white blood cells and God bless you."

Why would I have a slightly increased white blood cell count and slightly decreased kidney function? I went to the emergency room the other day with abdominal pain and pain in my lower back (right about where my kidneys are). The doctor gave me some prednisone and percocet and told me to visit my personal doctor. The ER doctor said that I may have either ulcerative colitis or crohn's disease. I have been to the ER once before for this, but my back didn't hurt. When I went to see my doctor, he said that I had a slightly high white blood cell count (15) and that my kidney function was slightly decreased. Instead of sending me to the GI specialist that the ER doctor recommended, he is sending me to a kidney specialist tomorrow. Does anyone who is qualified have any idea what is going on and how serious this is? I am 21 and in otherwise good health.

debbie replied: "You may have had a kidney stone or some type of kidney infection. Did they say there was blood in your urine microscopically; if they did, it is probabaly a stone. If they did not find any blood , it is probably some type of infection."
